Spring Break in CDMX: A Trip to Remember (and Recover From)
Mexico City Gave Everything (Except Clean Ice)
This past March, I took a spring break trip to Mexico City with my best friend and a friend from work—both of whom, fun fact, also happen to be teachers at my school. Honestly, there wasn’t a super deep reason why we picked CDMX. We had just heard great things, flights were affordable, and my travel buddies are both bilingual in Spanish (shoutout to them because that made me feel a lot more secure). So we booked it.
Funny enough, before we left, one of our coworkers—a Spanish teacher from Mexico City—warned us not to go. He was convinced it would be too dangerous and told us to be extra careful. Naturally, we were a little on edge at first…
But y’all, we felt so safe the entire time.
Seriously, the people were incredibly kind, the vibes were peaceful, and I even found myself having full conversations with strangers on the street—something I never do. It completely flipped any narrative I had in my head. I know everyone’s experience is different, but mine was overwhelmingly positive.
Let me just say: we had a time.
I truly enjoyed everything we did. CDMX is full of art, color, culture, and walkability. The city itself felt unreal in the best way. There’s so much to do and eat and see, and every day felt like a new little adventure.
Now… I do need to mention the one thing that took us out: the water.
I had heard the warnings. I knew not to drink it. And I told my friends that too. I even made a whole announcement when we went to Taquería Orinoco, like “Hey y’all—don’t drink the water!” I also asked if the ice was okay, and they were like, “Girl, it’s fine. Why would they give us bad ice???” Right…
Long story short: we drank the ice. And I’m convinced that is what gave us all food poisoning. It was tragic. Two of us were bedridden for an entire day and missed out on our plans, and the third one held strong until the flight home… where she ended up needing to be wheeled off the plane in a wheelchair. Chileeee the DRAMA!
Still, despite the chaos and stomach trauma, I’d go back in a heartbeat. CDMX owes me nothing (except a stronger immune system maybe).
If you’re thinking about planning a trip there, I put together a full 5-day itinerary based on everything we did—plus the things we wanted to do but didn’t get to. It’s got restaurant recommendations, activities, tips, and a packing checklist. I promise it’s worth it (and I left plenty of surprises out of this post so you don’t get spoiled).
